Parts of a Napier suburb were cordoned off this morning after a member of the public reported seeing gang members in the area with firearms.

Police received a call from a member of the public at 8.45am today reporting he had seen a carload of Mongrel Mob members pull up at a house in Nuffield Ave, Maraenui, carrying firearms.

A Police spokesperson said the Hawke's Bay Armed Offenders Squad was called in and houses in Nuffield Ave and nearby Williams St were searched, as well as a car.

Road blocks were in place on surrounding streets, and residents were seen leaving their houses in dressing gowns.

Nothing was found in the searches.

People in one of the houses were told to leave the house during the incident, but were later allowed to return.
