Napier man dies following assault

A Napier woman is due to appear in the Napier District Court today charged with assault after the death of a man in the city early this morning.

A 45-year-old man died in the Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital this morning after he was  stabbed in what police believe was a domestic incident at a house in Geddis Avenue, Maraenui, yesterday afternoon.

The 35-year-old Napier woman was yesterday arrested and charged with assault in relation to the incident.  She will be appearing in the Napier District Court today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange of Hawke's Bay CIB said a full scene examination will continue at the house over the next day or so by police and ESR staff.

A forensic post mortem is expected to be carried out tomorrow to establish the cause of the man's death.  A number of witnesses are expected to be interviewed over the next few days to establish what had occurred at the house over the weekend, Mr de Lange said.

The name of the dead man will not be released until all family have been notified.
