ATHLETICS - Cumming to fore with golden haul in Finland

Veteran athlete Dawn Cumming has scooped four gold medals in Finland.

Competing in the W75-79 grade at the World Masters Athletics Championship in Lahti, northwest of Helsinki, Cumming also won a silver and bronze medal.

"The fact that she's still doing it [competing] is fantastic but to come back with all those medals is just amazing," Hawke's Bay stalwart Jim Tobin told SportToday yesterday.

He said there were 6000 athletes from throughout the world at the 10-day event which finished last weekend.

Cumming (pictured), Tobin said, hadn't arrive home yet because it was likely she was part of a cruise going through Russia after the championship finished.

The 76-year-old from Havelock North won gold in the 5000m track walk event, clocking 39min 59sec.

She emulated that feat in the 2000m steeplechase in 12min 3sec and the 8km cross-country event.

"She was also part of the women's 4x400m relay team in the W75 category that won gold too," Tobin said.

Cumming was runner-up in the 1500m event of her age category and won bronze in the 800m race.
