Bay shearers a cut above the rest at competitions

Hawke's Bay shearers won nine titles in competitions around the country at the weekend.

The wins included an open-finals double by Napier shearer Dion King at the Northern Southland Community Shears, in Lumsden, on Friday, and the New Zealand Crossbred Lambs Championship, at Winton, the next day.

Napier's defending champ, John Kirkpatrick, qualified for only one of the two finals but won the Horowhenua Show title in Levin on Sunday.

Porangahau teenager Anaru Wakefield and Hastings-based Jack Robinson, from Northern Ireland, also scored twice, Wakefield in the junior finals at Tauranga on Saturday and at Levin, and Robinson in the senior finals at the Wairoa Show on Saturday and also at Levin.

Other Hawke's Bay winners were Waipukurau's Tysson Hema in the senior final at Tauranga, and Napier rookie Ben Nicholson won the Wairoa junior final.
