Booze blitz as drivers head home

GLENN TAYLOR

FINAL WHISTLE: Motorists face a lineup of five police Tactical Alcohol Group staff on one of Napier's main arterial roads about half an hour after the Rugby World Cup final ended.

The checkpoint, on Hyderabad Rd, Corunna Bay, focused on traffic heading toward the city and suburbs from the West Quay, Ahuriri and Westshore areas.

Group acting senior sergeant Clint Adamson, who was not on duty, said it was one of several checkpoints set-up by the group and other police traffic staff in Napier and Hastings during the night.

"It was mainly to see that everyone was getting home safely," he said.

No details were available by mid-morning on whether any drivers were being prosecuted for drink-driving.
