Early risers in parts of Taradale had to resort to camp cookers and other heating equipment for breakfast yesterday.

Power was cut as lines staff carried out repairs at the scene of a crash in which a vehicle hit a pole earlier in the morning.

The crash happened in Avondale Rd just after 2.30am, and a spokesman for Unison Networks said 214 customers had power disrupted between 4.35am and 6.50am as a crew worked on repairs at the crash site.

The Fire Service attended the crash, said a spokesman, but other details were not available from police, although it was understood no one was seriously hurt.

The cut followed another which affected more than 500 customers mainly in the Tutira area north of Napier, after high winds brought down 11kV and 33kV lines late on Saturday night.

Parts of Napier had also been without power for about 14 minutes early last Thursday afternoon.
