The previous record for the total number of bikes presented at an iWay big bike fix up event was broken on February 5 at the Hastings clock tower.

Mechanics from Avanti and Revolution Bikes looked over 236 bikes, which exceeded the previous record of 168.

The bikes were inspected to ensure they were roadworthy and minor repairs were completed on the spot. The original 90-minute event was extended by an hour to cope with the large number of bikes.

Anyone whose bike couldn't be fixed within a short time was given a $10 voucher that will help pay for more thorough repairs at a bike shop. The big bike fixup was part of the Hastings District Council's support of BikeWise Month. Events held during February included the BikeWise Challenge for businesses and the Go by Bike breakfast that encourages people to ride to work or school on Friday, February 24.

Anyone who decides to cycle on that day, is invited to stop at the Hawke's Bay Opera House between 7am and 8.30am for breakfast. BikeWise month also includes the Hawke's Bay Regional Council's new mass trail ride on Saturday, February 25, which will finish at the Puketapu Domain.
