Builders get behind hospice makeover

The walls at Cranford Hospice are stripped and bare in preparation for its $34,000 makeover courtesy of the Registered Master Builders' Association.

The hospice's eight bedrooms were in for a major revamp with new wallpaper, curtains, light fixtures and flat screen televisions. Work started last week and was scheduled for completion at the end of the month, before the hospice's reopening in November.

Cranford Hospice executive assistant Jackie Hantz believed the decor of the rooms had not been touched in about 10 years.

The neutral colour scheme of greys and cream would replace the mottled wallpaper in various shades of blue, green and pink, and would match the hallway and reception areas renovated last year.

About $16,000 of the total cost was raised from a charity auction at the Master Builder's Association's national conference in Napier six months ago. The remaining $18,000 was raised following the auction in a flurry of donations after members from the Auckland branch granted $1000 on the spot and challenged others to match it.

Hawke's Bay Registered Master Builders project manager Bill Livingston said: "It was very inspiring and quite humbling that other regions got in behind a Hawke's Bay charity."

Cranford Hospice board chairman Ken Gilligan said the generosity of the Registered Master Builders' Association was greatly appreciated and the new look would help create the best possible environment for the patients.
