Canterbury University has decided to delay its progressive recall of staff by 24 hours to allow confirmation of building status.
The university was badly damaged during Saturday's 7.1 quake.
``We still intend to run a phased and tightly controlled programme to allow staff to assist in the clean-up,'' vice-chancellor Rod Carr said today.
Staff would be required to attend a briefing on the clean-up and issued with health and safety guidelines before they were allowed into their buildings, Dr Carr said.
