Christmas service at Waiapu

NZPA / Wayne Drought

A service in preparation of Christmas and which reflects on the first Christmas service held in New Zealand almost 200 years ago will take place at Waiapu Cathedral in Napier this Sunday.

The service, called Te Rongo Pai, or Joyful News, is the traditional nine lessons and carols but with the addition of the local element - being the anniversary of the first festive service on these shores two centuries ago.

"The service helps us prepare for Christmas," Dean Helen Jacobi said.

"People always enjoy coming and taking time out from the business of this time of the year to reflect on the meaning of Christmas."

The service begins at 7pm.
