Concert raises brass for Christchurch

A concert staged by brass and pipe bands in Napier has raised $7000 for the Christchurch Earthquake appeal.

The concert by the Napier Brass Band and the Drones & Sticks Pipe Band raised money for officers from fire, ambulance and police services who have been working in Christchurch.

Other performers in the concert included vocalist Jon Fletcher with Sally Rutgers and Jenni Hodgson, and dancers from the Kerren Withington School of Dance. The dancers performed a Sailors' Hornpipe as a tribute to the Navy personnel from HMNZS Canterbury, in Lyttleton when the quake struck on February 22.

Harry Renfree, president of the Drones & Sticks Pipe Band, was delighted with the result. "Many people gave their time or expertise and helped us stage the concert so we could make this a meaningful donation."

For Port of Napier Brass Band, the concert came on top of a busy practice schedule in the lead up to the national contest.

"Although it's been a busy time, members of both bands have enjoyed working together to stage this combination of brass and pipes," President Ron Garland said.
