Police in Napier were late yesterday seeking a man who ran off after crashing his car into a cross-town drain while being chased by officers.

The incident happened in a reserve near the Napier Baptist Church, on Riverbend Rd, and the car ended in a drain beside a walk bridge leading to Russell Rd.

It happened about 3.30pm and police spent more than an hour searching for the driver, including visiting addresses in nearby Marewa streets. During the incident, another car left rural Riverbend Rd about 2km away and hit a low-level shelter belt.
