Watching as a parent with my own daughters I could identify with the anger and angst felt by Will (Clive Owen) over his helplessness in protecting his daughter Annie (Liana Liberato).
Trust tells a story that is not based on fantasy but on some of the shocking realities of today's society.
Annie is a typical 14-year-old with the doubts and insecurities that come with being a young girl going into a new school.
She wants to fit in but she is scared.
No one seems to know what she is going through, particularly her parents.
Her only sanity is Charlie, a 15-year-old boy she meets in an online chatroom and who understands her problems.
A online bond develops between the pair before it progresses to cellphone communication.
Then it emerges that Charlie is not 15.
He's 17, then he's 20, then he's 25.
Annie dismisses her fears and agrees to meet her new friend.
What she finds is a 30-something man who is nothing more than a sick paedophile.
Annie has fallen into his trap and cannot escape until she has been sexually assaulted.
The family is destroyed by the news of the attack and can't understand where the trust broke down between Annie and her parents.
Everyone is forced to cope with what has happened in their own ways.
It is only when the FBI confirms that "Charlie" is a serial paedophile and Annie is his fourth victim that the reality of what has happened hits home.
Director David Schwimmer tastefully tells a very distressing story that is going to make every parent sit up and take notice.
