If your bike has a few squeaks and groans, or has been parked in the garage gathering dust, a free safety check is available at the Big Bike Fix-Up at Havelock North Domain this Sunday.
Bike mechanics will be available from 11am to midday to give all bikes the once-over to make sure they are roadworthy.
The initiative is part of Hastings District Council's iWay project, which aims to get more people walking and cycling in Hastings.
"Bike mechanics from Revolution Bikes and Avanti Plus Hastings will give old bikes a check over and make any minor repairs on the spot," iWay project manager Owen Mata said.
"If they can't do the work within the five-minute check, bike owners will receive a $20 voucher for bike repairs at one of the participating bike shops."
Mr Mata said the bike checks are essential before winter so people can decrease the risk of riding in tough conditions.
"Riding your bike in winter needs a bit more care, as roads can get wet and slippery.
"It's good to be sure that brakes, tyres and other parts of your bike are in tip-top condition."
