Golf: HB men's teams struggle in Hamilton
The straight and narrow of it is the Hawke's Bay golfers' collective took a beating at the weekend.
"We talked about it and feel we were a little under-done but we're getting there," Stortford Autosale Hawke's Bay senior men and junior team manager Allen Forrest said last night after both teams managed to beat only East Coast-Poverty Bay in the annual "Provincial Quadrangular" (the former Woolaway) tournament in Hamilton at the weekend.
With top seed Blair Shaw not available (he also missed the annual Kapi Tareha this month), ex-professional Richard Squire stepped up with Max Gill, 14, coming in at the tail end.
Hawke's Bay seniors lost 7-1 to Bay of Plenty and 5-2 to Waikato on Saturday before eclipsing Poverty bay 5-3 on Sunday at the Narrows Golf Club.
The juniors had 4-0 results in their three matches but only against Poverty Bay were they on the right side of the ledger.
Squire had two wins on Saturday whileGill, Carlos Tawera and No 2 Ben Swinburne carded halves in the afternoon.
Squire, Madison Noaks, promoted to No 4, and Stefan Hepburn lost on Sunday.
"It was good to see Carlos and Max get halves," Forrest said, adding experience for the youngsters was vital.
While it had been wet in Waikato, the greens were slick and the course was in superb nick, he said.
