Hastings basketballers pipped in overtime

Basketball

Hastings Boys' High School finished second at the Central Region Secondary Schools junior basketball tournament which ended in New Plymouth on Monday.

The Thomas Bartlett-coached side lost 82-79 to St Patrick's College in the final which went to overtime.

Bartlett's troops beat Palmerston North Boys' High School 91-53 in their semifinal and, in pool play, beat Hawera High School 71-44, Wellington College 65-45, Hutt Valley High School 71-62 and New Plymouth Boys' High School 60-51.

Hockey

The Hastings Boys' High School 1st XI lost their first two games at the Mayhill Cup tournament in Levin on Monday - 6-0 against Pukekohe High School and 4-3 against Otumoetai College.

Rugby

Napier Boys' High School completed an unbeaten run in pool play at the national under-15 secondary schools rugby tournament in Christchurch yesterday with a 12-5 win against Tauranga Boys' College.

In-form No8 Vinny Guildford and flanker Zane Tomalin scored Napier's tries and fullback Ethan Bradey kicked a conversion.

Guildford and hooker Morgan Poi were valuable contributors to the winning pack while Bradey and first five-eighth Graeme Tryon impressed in the Napier backline.

Napier were to play their quarterfinal today.

Hastings Boys' High School bowed out of quarterfinal contention with two losses on Monday - 39-7 to Wesley College and 29-7 to St Bede's. The HBHS under-14s lost both of their games at the Colquhoun tournament in Palmerston North on Monday - 29-7 to Gisborne Boys' High School and 24-10 to Tauranga Boys' High School.

Soccer

After a mediocre opening day, the Napier Boys' High School 1st XI soccer team  made the quarterfinals in Napier today.

Yesterday, the Peter McGlashan-coached side beat Rangitoto College (Auckland) 5-2 to make the top-eight of the Lotto New Zealand Secondary Schoolboys' Championship at a boggy Park Island.

When SportToday went to press today, NBHS were playing undefeated Sacred Heart College (Auckland) in an 11am kick-off with the downpour again dictating terms.

"We know we didn't play well on the first day so today [yesterday] we were generally tidy, holding our positions and a lot more determined," McGlashan said.

With St Pat's Silverstream (Wellington) drawing 1-1 with Christchurch Boys' High School, NBHS finished runners-up in pool C, with the Southerners claiming the top rung.

"In the top eight everybody's tough," McGlashan replied when asked what NBHS's chances were of progressing in the annual tourney.

"If my guys turn up determined to foot it tomorrow and show what they are capable of doing then we'll be there," he said, though emphasising the persistent rain had chopped up the grounds.

NBHS yesterday shot into a 3-2 halftime lead with Matt Wedgewood, Jack Needs and Andy Bevin finding the net before Josh Stewart and Cameron Emmerson also got on the scorecard in the second spell to boost the goal difference had St Pat's won.

The HBHS 1st XI thrashed Wainuiomata 8-0 and lost 4-0 to St John's College of Hamilton on day one of the Trident Trophy event in New Plymouth on Monday.
