Hastings St work progresses

Favourable weather has provided good conditions for progress on the first stage of the Hastings St redevelopment project in Napier.

Napier City Council said that as a result, Albion St had been re-opened for parking and to one-way traffic from Hastings St to Marine Parade.

Vautier St was closed at Hastings St to allow for the upgrade of the water main and it would remain closed while stormwater and sewer services were also upgraded.

Temporary sealing of Hastings St between Albion St and Rebel Sport had allowed for parallel parking in front of Dunvegan House.

Council staff had finished laying new large stormwater and sewer pipes from Albion St to Motordrome. Once tested, the upgrade of existing water mains at the intersection of Hastings St and Vautier St would be complete.

Telecommunications and power companies had installed new ducts from Albion St to Lighting Direct.

Foundations for new street light poles had been put in from Albion St as far as the Rebel Sport car park.

The street makeover was aimed at creating a more "pedestrian-friendly environment" for shoppers and visitors in downtown Napier.

The upgrade of Hastings St was being carried out in three sections over three years. Albion St to Tennyson St will be targeted next year and the final section, from Tennyson St to Browning St, was to be completed in 2014.
