Kiwiana-themed family fun and live music will add something extra to the atmosphere at this year's More FM Waimarama Beach Day on Sunday.

The ever-popular day of games, competitions and crowning of a new Miss Waimarama is known to attract thousands to the beach.

Mediaworks Hawke's Bay Operations Manager Trudy Godwin said the new activities, including an egg and spoon, jandal toss and sack races, will add a point of difference to the day-long event.

"This year we are doing something a little bit different," she said, "It will be great to add a little extra atmosphere.

"It's really just something for families and kids to do, some fun family competitions to keep them involved and get them into some fun team challenges."

Local band Devil's Elbow will also add something new.

"We have never had a band out there so it will be a lot of fun."

In the afternoon, large crowds were expected to crowd the domain for the Wearable Art and Miss Waimarama competitions.

All entries - from both designers and beach babes - will be taken on the day.

Every year the event raised money for the Waimarama Surf Lifesaving Club.

If foul weather intervenes on Sunday, Ms Godwin said attendees would be notified via radio and the day would be rescheduled for January 22.
