A young family passing through Hawke's Bay on their way to a new life in Dunedin with their 18-month-old son have narrowly escaped tragedy.

Ongaonga bull farmer Tony Weber was returning from kayaking the Mohaka River at 2.35pm yesterday when he noticed "a very heavy trailer fishtailing down the road".

"It ended up flipping over and it pushed them off the road and through a fence," he said.

"They just about went down a bank - they are very, very lucky."

The trailer hatch flew open before they left the road.

"Their worldly goods were just all over the place. So a whole lot of us stopped and pushed it off to the side of the road."

The farmer whose fence they damaged took the broken goods to dispose of and other motorists transported goods to a towing yard to be collected later.
