Courtney Jessep, 12, helps gather maize from Crop and Food, on Lawn Road.
Courtney's family has a farm at Kaiwaka, north of Napier, and has been struggling to feed stock due to the drought in Hawke's Bay.
His mother, Jane Jessep, said Crop and Food had offered the test maize crop to the family.
"They have already taken the test samples they need, so this was what was left over," she said.
Yesterday, a group of friends banded together to help pick about four tonnes of maize, which would be used to feed their 300 deer.
Mrs Jessep said they had sold some stock because of the conditions and also bought in hay to help feed what they still had on the property. She said it was wonderful to receive the maize. "It's a really good boost".
