One of Marineland's oldest residents has died.

Trinity, a Californian sealion which was not expected to live as long as it did, died in its sleep last Wednesday night and was discovered by staff on Thursday morning.

The animal had contracted a stomach condition when it was a pup and was not expected to live to the age it did.

Marineland staff who continue to look after the sealions and penguins at the now closed facility were said to be saddened at losing one of the older members of the marine family.

There are about 50 animals behind Marineland's closed doors, including seals, sea lions, penguins and marine birds.

Another of the Californian sea lions, Makea, was born in Marineland and still lives there, but had always been off limits to the public.
