Mayhem as power poles fall

File

A large industrial block has no power and is closed to traffic after six power poles fell like dominoes in a Hawke's Bay suburb this morning.

Emergency services descended on Omahu Rd, Hastings, by the Hawke's Bay Expressway, about 9.30am after the poles fell.

There were no injuries and the poles did not cause damage to property when they fell, a Hawke's Bay Today journalist at the scene reported.

However, the whole block in the busy industrial area was without power, and it was thought it may not be restored until tomorrow.

Businesses were talking of shutting down for the day.

Initial reports of a truck hitting one of the poles was incorrect.

Police, Unison, Hastings District Council and the fire department were at the scene.

Cordons were in place to divert traffic, and were likely to be in place for much of the day.
