Old motors crank it up in Bay

Hastings man Bob Ackerley remembers learning to drive in a Morris 8 Tourer and so it's fitting he should be one of three Hawke's Bay people organising the national annual rally in the Bay to celebrate the popular British vehicle.

"It was the first car I owned, a great little car, very reliable," Mr Ackerley said.

He rekindled his love for the motor vehicle, which was manufactured during the 1930s and 1940s, about five years ago when he bought another Morris 8.

This week he was hosting other Morris Eight Tourer Club members from around the country who are involved in an extensive rally programme through to January 4.

Today the group will be visiting Napier tourist attractions on foot but will have their vehicles on display outside the Sunken Gardens, Marine Parade, for everyone to see from 9am.
