Hawke's Bay Broadcaster Paul Holmes has been flown to Auckland Hospital to receive treatment for a heart condition.

Auckland DHB spokesman Mark Fenwick said the 61-year-old Q & A host was in a stable condition after being taken to hospital by helicopter from Hawkes Bay yesterday.

More updates would be provided later today, he said.

Newstalk ZB station manager Dallas Gurney said Holmes was having a routine heart procedure to remedy a long-term complaint.

The broadcaster was in good spirits and is expected to return to work within weeks, Mr Gurney said.

Holmes was admitted to Hawke's Bay Hospital after falling ill at his home at Poukawa, near Hastings, in January.

However, he recovered quickly and returned to work the following week.
