For graphic designer-turned photographer Birgit Krippner pointing her camera at people never fails to come up with the candid moments she is after.

Diverse was just the right title for her show at the Photographers' Gallery, Napier, she says, as the word summed up what she was trying to say through her photos.

"It's all about people, capturing the mood, the soul, the raw and unperfumed moments," she says.

Originally from Austria, Krippner spent eight years living in New York before moving to Hawke's Bay with her husband eight years ago.

In 2006 they shifted to Wellington.

Diverse is a selection of photos taken in the Big Apple and in New Zealand. Krippner, who had an MA in graphic design, said she always had a passion for photography and a few years ago, after enthusiastically wielding a new camera and putting her work on the internet, the latter won out. Favourable comments made her think she was "on the right track".

Her latest assignment for which she leaves for Dubai this week will be quite different - trying to capture the spiritual connection between horses and those who work with them.
