Police investigate Peak crash

Police are continuing to investigate how a car driven by a 26-year-old Hastings man left the edge of Te Mata Peak late Tuesday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene about 8.30pm and found the man conscious and on a ridge. He was 100m above the wreckage of his vehicle, found 300m below the edge.

Hastings Police Senior Constable Tim Rowe said the police investigation was ongoing, with witnesses yet to be spoken to. They were also hoping to speak to the driver once his condition improved.

"His vehicle was located approximately 300 metres down the embankment," he said.

"He was located by two police officers on foot about 100m above the vehicle."

No one else was in the vehicle. Mr Rowe said it appeared the man was thrown from the vehicle on impact.

"He was conscious at that time and the helicopter was called in to winch him from the ledge because it was too unsafe to take him down.

"The police investigation is continuing into the events surrounding how the vehicle came to go off the peak."

Yesterday the man was in a serious but stable condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital, Hastings.
