ENTERTAINING: Suzie Johnson
A former Hawke's Bay girl is returning home to share her comical and politically incorrect take on how women of all sizes should dress to lift self-esteem to help send a group of young men to the UK.
Suzie Johnson, who operates several fashion and jewellery shops in the Manawatu under the `Oosh' brand, was contacted by Napier Boys' High School's PE teacher and First XI football coach Rob Gunn who asked if she could lend a hand to a major fundraising campaign which has been two years in the running.
She agreed, and will be staging her acclaimed two-hour show What to Wear - Not to Wear at the school's hall tomorrow night.
The show, of advice to women how to dress to their body shape, as well as a few ``life lessons'' in self-esteem, has been described as ``quirky, funny and raw.''
Mr Gunn said he was delighted she had decided to ``come home''and put the show on as part of the school's biggest sporting fundraising project.
Local wineries Trinity Hill, Sacred Hill and beach House had also agreed to help by donating refreshments ``to get the evening started.''
``We have been fundraising for two years to take a group of 18 boys to the United Kingdom to play football against several English schools and clubs,'' he said.
``And we are nearly there now- it has been two years and wewant to get over the line now.''
The three-week trip, which will see the boys playing eight games, as well as catch up with some top
English Premiership matches, is costing about $100,000 all up.
``Parents, everyone, has beeninvolved,'' Mr Gunn said, adding that the show was the latest in a string of diverse fundraising events which had been organised.
``Other fundraisers we have completed over the two years have been organising seats at the Mission Concert and A Day On The Green - working at the Rugby World Cup games in Napier, the Hawkes Bay races and (putting out) the advertising signs at Magpies games _ plus countless other things.''
He said the boys were set to depart on March 23 and were ``really looking forward to it.''
``One of the things that makes our school special is the opportunities that are available for our boys, and this tour is another example of that. ``I believe they will be a credit to the school, Hawkes Bay and New Zealand on the tour. They are a good bunch of young men.''
