Two fire engines attended a shed fire at the back of an uninhabited property in Havelock North last night.

The fire did not reach the house itself but although it was a relatively minor incident, police were called because arson was suspected.

Havelock North station officer Warren Dochary said the call was received about 7.35pm from neighbours, who were dousing the fire with a garden hose when firefighters arrived.

"It's just a shed, probably 4m by 4m," Mr Dochary said.

"It was fully involved in fire when we got here.

"We're just trying to ascertain the cause. We need police to come and check it out.

"Had it been going a bit longer, the house would have been the next thing to catch fire."
