A large rubbish truck drifted before hitting a culvert and flipping when it hit the pothole on Omarunui Rd near Taradale about 8.45am yesterday.

The driver was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital with minor injuries and was later discharged.

Damage to the Bay Environmental vehicle was extensive, and a large tow truck was needed to remove it from the scene.

Hawke's Bay Roading Police Group Senior Constable Ken Hunt said the incident was being taken seriously.

"He has come down and hit the pothole which has made him drift for about 80m and then he has hit the culvert and rolled once," he said.

Hastings District Council staff were working at the scene to address the pothole.
