A fire on a power pole at Crosses Rd near Havelock North cut electricity to 546 customers in the Arataki area about 5.45am this morning.

A build up of pollutants such as pollen and dust on the insulators was thought to have caused the fire.

Powerlines company Unison said the power was restored to most customers in less than five minutes and the remaining customers were connected within 15 minutes.

Unison said the damaged power pole on Crosses Rd would need to be replaced and it would leave around 25 customers without power from 1pm today until the work was completed, which maybe between 6pm and 7pm tonight.
