LEARNING: Debbie Cullen ( back left), from the Red Cross, and Warren Meldrum, from Hastings District Council Civil Defence team spent yesterday educating Woodford House students Bella Smith (front left), Hattie McHardy, Jaimie McNeilly, Grace McIldowie, Sally Mickleson, and Holleigh Ellis about emergency response.
Staff and students at Woodford House, Havelock North, chose the Hawke's Bay earthquake anniversary as the perfect day to learn about emergency responses with Red Cross and Civil Defence.
It was the first time the agencies had hosted such a day with a local school, Hastings District Council emergency management officer Warren Meldrum said.
"It is the first time the Red Cross and our organisation have worked together on this kind of stuff - the girls really jumped on board," he said.
Students were taught what goes into an emergency response from the agencies, and held a minute's silence at 10.47am.
Year 12 student Sally Mickleson said she was "amazed" at how much preparation went in to emergency response and was going to make her own survival kit.
