Police are appealing for witnesses to a road rage attack in Napier on Sunday that resulted in two men being assaulted with crow bars and other weapons.
Detective Mike Signal of Napier police said the incident began on Church Rd in Taradale around 2.20pm when up to five vehicles began chasing a white Toyota station wagon.
The station wagon was forced to stop on Prebensen Drive between the entrance to Park Island and the SH5 roundaboutwhen the pursuing cars smashed into the front and rear of it. The driver and passenger of the station wagon were then assaulted with crow bars and other weapons.
The 54-year-old driver of the car received a broken arm and a number of blows to his head. He was admitted to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital and later released.
Mr Signal said a number of other motorists saw the attack and rang police.
"We need to speak to anyone who saw the incident or any witnesses who may have seen the vehicles chasing the Toyota station wagon in the Church Rd, Taradale, Park Island and Prebensen Drive areas. There was a reasonable amount of traffic on the roads at that time on Sunday and it's important we speak with anyone who saw any vehicles speeding or appearing to race in the area."
Mr Signal said police were unsure of the reasons or motive for the attack. The driver and passenger in the station wagon were being spoken to by police. No arrests have been made so far.
Anyone with information about the incident should contact Mr Signal or Detective John McGregor at Napier police on 8310700. Alternatively, information can be left anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
