SQUASH: Redman set for world champs

Promising squash player Bryce Redman has delivered for Hawke's Bay and it's almost time for the Bay to deliver for him.

Redman became the first Hawke's Bay Squash Club member to be selected for a New Zealand senior or junior team in 25 years at the weekend when named in the Kiwi team for the world junior champs which begin in Ecuador next month.

"All the hard work and sacrifices have paid off ... it was an unbelievable feeling when I heard my name," Redman, 18, told SportToday minutes after the team was announced on Sunday night.

"I've got a lot to thank Dad for ... he's been my coach from day one and has been there the whole time," said Redman referring to his father and clubmate Keith Redman.

An architecture student at Auckland University, Redman, is one of four players named in the New Zealand team. Three of the four will play in each tie of the teams event at the champs which will be staged after the week-long individual section which starts on July 26.

New Zealand's playing order will be finalised after the North Island junior champs which will be played at Redman's Hawke's Bay club from July 8-11.

"Hopefully the home crowd will get behind me and help me do well," said Redman who will be the third seed in the under-19 boys section of the event.

The Kiwi team was announced after the weekend's North Island senior champs in Auckland where the 12th seeded Redman finished ninth. The best finish by a member of the team was fifth.

"It's been an awesome week. I passed my end-of-term exams at uni and then got selected for New Zealand ... Dad has been a big help in my architecture too," said Redman referring to the fact his father is an architect with RFR Building and Project Management Ltd.

He knows he will get behind with his studies during the 20 days he is in Ecuador but isn't too concerned.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity ... I'll stress out about the studies when I get home," said Redman.

With three of the four Kiwis based in Auckland Redman said they will train every day before coming to the Bay. There will be a big emphasis on fitness because of the Ecuador venue being at high altitude.
