QUESTIONS: Police cordoned off a Gilray Ave address in Maraenui yesterday after a man in his 20s was hospitalised following a stabbing.

Police were last night trying to piece together the details of a stabbing in a Napier suburb that hospitalised a man in his 20s.

The man received stab wounds after a fight in the Maraenui area about 4pm yesterday. Four police cars were seen speeding to a nearby Gilray Ave address that was soon cordoned off before some occupants were escorted away by about six officers.

The man was in a stable condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital last night.

Hawke's Bay Police Senior Sergeant Mike Stevenson said the details of the stabbing were still being put together due to differing stories.

"At this stage we are investigating an incident where a male has been stabbed," Mr Stevenson said.

There was confusion regarding the exact location of the incident, and why the fight began. It was believed the man may have been stabbed during a confrontation at the community skate park on Bledisloe Rd.

"We are trying to get to the bottom of what has happened at this stage and determine where he actually was stabbed, so we can't definitively say it was at the skate bowl because we have a couple of differing stories," Mr Stevenson said.

Mr Stevenson a number of people were helping with enquiries.
