Swimming in Hawke's Bay appears to have a solid base judging from the recently held Hastings and Districts Primary Schools' Sports Association championship held at Raureka Primary School in Hastings.

Nine schools - Ebbett Park, Camberley, Frimley, Mahora, Raureka, Mayfair, Riverslea, Central and Parkvale - competed in this annual event featuring freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and 4x25m relay.

Raureka did extremely well. Their year 4 boys' relay team won by almost a lap with Quaid Crawford, Zavier Dunn, Paige Kamper and Etana Luki claiming honours in individual events.

Quaid won the year 4 freestyle and backstroke; Zavier, who is in year 3, won the year 4 boys' breaststroke; Paige, a year 3 pupil, claimed third spot in freestyle and breaststroke for year 4 girls; and Etana won the girls' year 6 freestyle event, adding to her third place in the breaststroke.

Raureka principal Greg Riceman said: "The children and parents enjoy this type of competition against other schools. It's exciting all round. We are very proud."
