Swimmers told to steer clear of lake

The Hawke's Bay District Health Board has lifted the cyanobacteria algae bloom warning from Lake Tutira, north of Napier, but is still advising against swimming there because of the "duck itch" threat.

Medical officer of health Nicholas Jones said lifting the warning, in place since the end of April, meant such recreational activities as kayaking could resume.

Recent sampling by the Hawke's Bay Regional Council showed the cyanobacteria bloom was no longer present. Some cyanobacteria species produce toxins (cyanotoxins), which pose a risk to humans and animals when consumed in drinking water or by direct contact during recreational activities.

Dr Jones said while there had been no reported cases of "duck itch" since January, swimming in the lake should be avoided.
