A young man has appeared in court over an assault outside the Hastings KFC last month that left a man with his jaw broken in two places and teeth missing.

Flaxmere resident Clinton Timoteo Vaiusu, 19, appeared in the Hastings District Court yesterday charged with wounding with intent to injure. He entered no plea. A 15-year-old youth has been referred to Youth Aid in relation to the same incident.

The victim, a 51-year-old Hastings man, was flown to Palmerston North Hospital for jaw surgery the day after the incident.

Hawke's Bay CIB Detective Rob Parker said police had received assistance from members of the public and restaurant staff who were present at the time.

This, with information from the victim and CCTV footage from the restaurant, had been helpful in piecing together what had happened on the night.

Vaiusu was remanded on bail until his next appearance in November.
