Touch event will be biggie

The touch tournament at the Hawke's Bay Masters Games will be played at Tareha Park, Taradale, on the weekend of October 8-9.

Rachel Cooper, of the Taradale Rugby Club, will run the New Zealand Touch Association-sanctioned tournament. The origins of touch football can be traced back to Australia in the 1960s, where it was used as a warm-up game for rugby codes.

Touch is a fast-moving, minimal-contact, evasive game that is played throughout the world by men and women of all ages and skill levels. The game is similar to rugby but without the tackling, scrummaging, rucking, mauling, lineouts and kicks.

The men's tournament is for players over 30 and over 40, while the women have to be 25-plus.

There is also a mixed teams event in which there must be three women on the field at all times.
