A flash mob added song and dance to the aquatic action for hundreds of people enjoying Hastings water theme park Splash Planet on Saturday.

Born To Move Dance Academy, Hastings, started the flash mob dance as part of an initiative by the park's manager Peran Hutchings.

"We were looking at the idea of a flash mob for a few years, to do something different and then Born To Move from Hastings came on board.

"Sometimes the flash mob thing can be a bit over done, especially when people already know it's going to happen. To me, if everyone knows, that's not a flash mob. So we wanted it to be a surprise for everyone and it was.

"About 90 per cent of our staff didn't know it was going to happen either."

More flash mobs could be held in the future, Mr Hutchings said.

The hot summer weather is providing the park with some of the highest visitor figures in recent years.

"We are heading towards a bumper summer season. Visitor numbers for December were up on last year and January is looking pretty good so far."

Visitors of note recently included All Black winger Julian Savea and V8 Supercar driver Greg Murphy.
