Wanted: Men for drag race
Despite donning a pink top, Harry Summerfield failed to connect with his feminine side while signing up contestants for the Hector Jones Drag Race at the Hawke's Bay Show tomorrow.
Male contestants in female attire will complete a 100m dash - with the obstacles of putting on a bra, applying nail polish and "yoga stretches".
After completing the problematic obstacles, they will mount electric scooters to the finish and drag-race glory.
At stake, as well as a considerable amount of male dignity, is $650 in prizes plus clothing (male).
Harry was soliciting candidates with vigour yesterday at the Hawke's Bay Showgrounds in Hastings.
"If not enough people enter, I'll have to enter myself," he said.
The race at midday on Friday is one of hundreds of events at the 149th annual show.
It opened yesterday with more traditional events but a strong wind made showjumping and dog trialling difficult.
Gale-force wind preceded a front that was expected to move over the South Island last night and should then sweep quickly across the North Island today.
Central Hawke's Bay was expecting gusts up to 130km/h in exposed places, possibly damaging trees, powerlines and making driving hazardous.
The winds were expected to ease by this morning. For northern Wairarapa and Central Hawkes Bay, however, westerly gales behind the front could still be severe through to Thursday night.
Friday is forecast to be dry, with the wind steadily fading.
