There was more water than a Dannevirke homeowner could handle on Thursday night.

"We were called to a Gordon St home when the owner reported flooding inside and water running down the internal walls," chief fire officer Mike Finucane said.

"The homeowner thought the water was coming in through the roof and that was before the heaviest rain falls began."

The Dannevirke Volunteer Fire Brigade checked the roof void of the house for any excess water, before leaving the property.

The Gordon St callout was the only one for the brigade, despite an evening of thunderstorms and torrential rain.

Dannevirke had 23.8mm of rain on Thursday evening, with culverts around town blocking and overflowing.

The rain was accompanied by fierce thunder and lightning.

"The lightning was the worst I've seen around here in a long time," plumber Brian Beale said.

In Norsewood, weather-watcher Lyn McConchie said there was 15mm of rain overnight.

With the rain came cooler temperatures, appreciated by humans and animals, Ms McConchie said.

"It's hell when you're in a fur coat and the temperatures are up on 30C," she said.

"My cat, Thunder, hasn't liked the heat at all.

"In early January, it looked as though we were going to have a dry month but I never count my millimetres before they've landed, which they did, well and truly on Thursday night."
