KIM CRAWFORD FIRST PICK SPARKLING SAUVIGNON BLANC $17

I could tell from the first sip that this is going to be a huge hit for summer. For starters it's crisp, herbaceous and lemony on the nose with a solid burst of passionfruit flavour and a spritzy-fresh texture in the mouth. And it's the first New Zealand sparkling wine with a screwcap. It will keep its fizz longer and you won't have to drink it all in one go and can save some for later. Widely available. www.kimcrawfordwines.co.nz

SILENI "THE PLAINS" HAWKE'S BAY MERLOT CABERNET FRANC 2009, $27

A fantastic, deeply fruity blend of 71 per cent merlot and 28 per cent cabernet franc, which reminds me of a black forest gateaux in a glass. Good use of oak has ensured a smoky, spicy, rather muscular mouthfeel and excellent length of flavour. www.sileni.co.nz
