The woman driver of a car which veered off the road on Te Mata Peak near Havelock North yesterday has improved and is now in a stable condition in hospital.

The car dropped about 30-to-40 metres, hit a tree on the way down and came to a stop in a ditch  just before 1pm, according to police.

Police said the car  wasn't travelling fast but the woman had to have turned right to leave the road.

Police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol was involved and are not ruling out medical conditions as the cause.

A passerby discovered the accident.
