Worker hurt in industrial blast

An explosion at a Hastings industrial business has landed one man in Hawke's Bay Hospital fighting for his life.

The Department of Labour is investigating the explosion at East Coast Scrap and Hawke's Bay Vehicle Recyclers which occurred about 10.45am yesterday.

St John Hawke's Bay co-ordinator Steve Smith said an intensive-care paramedic was sent to the Omahu Rd business to treat the patient, who was stabilised and taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital.

"He had chest injuries, really serious head injuries and was in a critical condition," Mr Smith said.

Hawke's Bay Today understands the man, in his 50s, had been a long-term employee of the Hastings business.

Police at the premises shortly after the explosion said no one else was injured and they were handing the investigation over to the Department of Labour, which began examining the scene yesterday afternoon.

Staff on site were upset and reluctant to talk about the explosion. They were later offered counselling through Victim Support.

Hastings fire service also dispatched two fire engines but were stood down.

Department of Labour said its investigation could take up to three months to complete.
