The traditional delights of Christmas are again being celebrated by the Linden Singers as they present their final concerts of the year. Inspired by the carol of the same name, the festive The Holly and the Ivy programme, will be performed at St John’s Cathedral in Napier on Saturday, 8 December at 4pm and repeated in St. Matthew’s Church, Hastings on Sunday, 9 December at 2.30pm. Holly and other evergreen shrubs like Ivy were originally used by Christians in Roman times as Christmas decorations. They have now become an integral part of the Christmas ritual and so seemed to the choir an apt name for this year's concerts. The programme opens with several Advent carols including Joseph and the Angel composed by Sir Richard Runciman Terry and Gabriel’s Message an Old Basque Carol arranged by Edgar Pettman. Both were eminent English musicians who lived in the second half of the 19th Century and into the 20th Century. These two carols tell of both Mary and Joseph being spoken to by an angel concerning the forthcoming birth of Jesus. Guest artist for the concerts is Wellington City Organist Douglas Mews. He is a freelance musician, organist at St Teresa's Catholic Church in Karori and Artist Teacher at the New Zealand School of Music. He is well known to Hawkes Bay audiences having previously performed with the Linden Singers and other local choirs. As well as accompanying the choir he will also present three chorale preludes on Allein Gott (Glory to God in the Highest) by J S Bach Noël on the Flute Stops and Noël Suisse by D’Aquin. John Rutter, the choir’s favourite composer is represented in the programme with his lively carol Jesus Child and the tranquil Mary’s Lullaby. Other favourites included in the programme are Good King Wenceslas, We Three Kings featuring the men’s voices and Silent Night. In keeping with tradition, as always the audience will be invited to join with the choir in singing several well-known Christmas Hymns The programme also includes two readings which will give some delightful historical background regarding the use of Holly and Ivy and Christmas Crackers used round the world during the festive season.
